Making your own laundry detergent is one of the easiest swaps you can make for a cleaner, chemical-free home. Store-bought detergents are often loaded with synthetic fragrance, optical brighteners, and harsh surfactants that linger on your clothes โ and against your skin all day long.
These two simple recipes use clean, plant-based ingredients that are safe for sensitive skin, babies, and the whole family. And if DIY isn't your thing, we've got you covered at the end with our favorite ready-made picks.
๐งด Recipe 1: Homemade Non-Toxic Liquid Laundry Detergent
Makes: ~64 loads
Best for: Front-loaders, HE machines, everyday laundry
What You'll Need:
- 1 cup Dr. Bronner's Unscented Castile Soap
- ยฝ cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
- ยฝ cup Baking Soda
- 2 cups hot water
- 20โ30 drops Essential Oils โ lavender or tea tree (optional)
- 1 cup White Distilled Vinegar (optional โ use as fabric softener in the rinse cycle)
Instructions:
- Dissolve the washing soda and baking soda in 2 cups of hot water. Stir until fully dissolved.
- Let the mixture cool slightly, then add the castile soap. Stir gently โ avoid creating too many suds.
- Add essential oils if using, and stir to combine.
- Pour into a large glass jar or reusable bottle.
- Shake gently before each use. Use 2โ3 tablespoons per load.
๐ก Tip: Add white vinegar to your fabric softener dispenser instead of conventional softener โ it naturally softens clothes and removes detergent residue without any chemicals.

- Combine grated soap, washing soda, baking soda, and oxygen whitener in a large bowl. Mix well.
- Add essential oils if using, and stir to distribute evenly.
