Essential Oils 101: Which Ones Are Safe for Kids (and Which to Avoid)

Not all essential oils are created equal — especially when it comes to kids. Here's what every parent needs to know before diffusing, rolling on, or blending.

Why Essential Oil Safety Matters for Children

Essential oils are powerful plant concentrates. What's perfectly safe for an adult can be too strong — or even harmful — for a child's developing nervous system, respiratory tract, and skin. The good news: there's a clear, science-backed framework for knowing which oils are safe, and which to leave on the shelf until your kids are older.

This guide covers everything parents need to know, from the KidSafe standard to our top recommended oils for sleep, calm, and congestion relief.

What Does "KidSafe" Actually Mean?

The KidSafe® designation was developed by Robert Tisserand, one of the world's leading aromatherapy researchers, in partnership with Plant Therapy. An oil or blend earns the KidSafe label only when it has been reviewed and confirmed safe for children ages 2–10 by a certified aromatherapist.

KidSafe oils are free from:

  • Eucalyptus (1,8-cineole) — can cause respiratory distress in young children
  • Peppermint — too stimulating for children under 6; can cause breathing issues in infants
  • Wintergreen — contains methyl salicylate, toxic in small amounts
  • Camphor — linked to seizures in children
  • Clove, cinnamon bark, oregano — too hot and irritating for young skin

Important: Even KidSafe oils must be properly diluted before skin application. The general guideline is 0.5–1% dilution for children (about 1 drop per teaspoon of carrier oil).

The Oils to Always Avoid Around Young Children

⚠️ Avoid these oils around children under 10: Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Wintergreen, Camphor, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Bark, Oregano, Thyme (thymol CT), Birch, and Rosemary (camphor CT).

Many popular "breathe easy" or "cold relief" blends contain eucalyptus or peppermint — always read the label before diffusing around young children. When in doubt, look for the KidSafe badge.

How to Use Essential Oils Safely with Kids

Diffusing

  • Use 1–2 drops (not 5–10 like for adults) in a full diffuser of water
  • Diffuse for 30–60 minutes max, then take a break
  • Never diffuse in an unventilated room or while a child is sleeping with the door closed
  • Keep the diffuser out of reach

Looking for a kid-friendly diffuser? Here are two we love:

Topical Application

  • Always dilute — even KidSafe oils. Use 0.5–1% dilution (1 drop per teaspoon of carrier oil)
  • Best spots: bottoms of feet, upper back, chest (avoid face and hands — kids touch everything)
  • Do a patch test first on a small area of skin
  • Never apply near eyes, nose, or mouth

Roll-Ons (Pre-Diluted)

  • The easiest and safest format for kids — no measuring, no mixing
  • Look for KidSafe-labeled roll-ons like the Plant Therapy line above
  • Still avoid the face and hands

The Bottom Line

Essential oils can be a beautiful, effective part of a natural family wellness routine — when used correctly. Stick to KidSafe-certified oils, always dilute before skin application, and keep diffuser sessions short. When in doubt, pre-diluted roll-ons take all the guesswork out of it.
